Low Testosterone Treatment in NJ

Low testosterone levels can have a detrimental effect on energy, mood, sexual health, and overall quality of life. At Somerset Urological Associates, we take the time needed to determine the cause of this common hormonal issue and tailor treatment to each patient’s unique needs.

What is Low Testosterone?

Low testosterone, sometimes called low T or hypogonadism, is an issue that occurs when the body does not produce enough of the hormone testosterone. Testosterone plays an important role for men of all ages, affecting their sex drive, muscle mass, bone strength, energy levels, and mood. Testosterone levels naturally change with age, but many men experience symptoms earlier in their lives.

Low testosterone can result from various causes. Testosterone begins to decline naturally starting around age 30, but low T can also be caused by obesity, diabetes, sleep issues, chronic diseases, and certain medications. Any issue with the testicles, hypothalamus, or pituitary gland can lead to low testosterone. Because symptoms can overlap with other health concerns, the condition is usually confirmed with a blood test. A careful evaluation from one of our NJ urologists can help determine whether low testosterone is the underlying cause of your symptoms.

Symptoms of Low Testosterone

Low testosterone can cause a wide array of symptoms affecting various parts of the body. Symptoms can also differ from person to person. Some changes are subtle at first, while others are more noticeable and affect daily life and sexual health.

Low Testosterone Symptoms Include:

  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Decreased sex drive/low libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced muscle mass and bone density
  • Increased body fat
  • Decreased strength or stamina
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes or irritability
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Loss of body hair
  • Growth of breast tissue (gynecomastia)

How Low Testosterone is Diagnosed

Diagnosing low testosterone starts with a detailed discussion of your symptoms, overall health, and any medications or conditions that could be impacting your hormone levels. Because testosterone levels can vary during the day, blood work is usually ordered in the morning when results are most reliable. In many cases, a repeat test is needed to confirm the result before treatment is recommended.

Your urologist may also evaluate other hormone levels and look for related health issues such as diabetes, sleep apnea, obesity, thyroid problems, or pituitary disorders. A physical exam can help identify signs that point toward other causes of your symptoms. Since fatigue, low sex drive, and mood changes can come from many sources, the diagnosis is based on both symptoms and lab results. The goal is to determine whether testosterone replacement is appropriate or if another condition needs to be addressed first.

Low Testosterone Treatment in NJ

Treatment for low testosterone depends on the patient’s symptoms, lab results, and overall health. In some cases, the first step is addressing lifestyle factors that may be lowering testosterone, such as excess weight, poor sleep, stress, or certain medications. There are a variety of foods that can increase testosterone as well. If symptoms are significant, testosterone replacement therapy may be recommended.

At Somerset Urological Associates, treatment for low T is approached on a case-by-case basis. Testosterone therapy can be delivered in a variety of ways, but because it can affect fertility, red blood cell counts, and other health markers, it may not be the right choice for everyone. Our team helps patients understand the benefits and risks of TRT before moving forward. The ultimate goal of treatment is to restore healthy hormone levels while supporting long-term urologic and overall health.

Low Testosterone Treatment Options Include:

  • Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)
    • Testosterone injections
    • Testosterone gels or creams
    • Testosterone patches
    • Testosterone pellets implanted under the skin
  • Lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, regular exercise, and diet changes that include testosterone-boosting foods
  • Treatment of related conditions, such as sleep apnea or diabetes
  • Changes to medications that affect hormone levels

Foods That Can Boost Testosterone:

  • Lean proteins
  • Eggs
  • Leafy greens
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Olive oil
  • Oysters
  • Fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel)
  • Fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants
  • Foods rich in vitamin D

NP Adrienne Laird was very cordial and I had a pleasant experience dealing with her. I came in with blood in my urine and was filled with health anxiety and she calmed those fears with her expert assessment of my condition. She had my urine sent out for cytocopy and scheduled an ultrasound of the abdomen. I feel confident everything will be fine now. In fact the results of the cytocopy came back negative for carcinoma so I am glad for the current results. I really am not understanding the bad reviews I see, but I have nothing but good experiences with the front desk, nurses, Dr. Harmon and nurse practitioner Laird. I recommend this group to all in need of urological care. Happy Labor Day by the way! I am Tony Chang by the way. I used my hobby business account so I can post another google review for you guys.

I hate writing reviews... let me add that I have two doctors in my family so I know when a doctor is good. I was greetes pleasantly and everyone was nice to me throughout my hour long visit. The only way I can see posting a one star review is if a competitor prompted it. They were a referal from my GP who is one of the best diagnosticians I have ever met.
