Laser Vaporization of the Prostate
Somerset Urological Associates is proud to continuously offer the most cutting-edge urological treatments to our clients. The laser vaporization of the prostate procedure that Somerset Urological Associates offers is used to treat moderate to severe urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia.
This treatment utilizes the GreenLight PVP system, which is a new laser product utilized to enlarge the prostate, which allows for quicker recovery time, and prevents the need for days of utilizing a catheter following the procedure. The PVP technology, or photoselective vaporization of the prostate, uses a laser to melt away excess prostate tissues that over time have caused the prostate to cinch down on the urethra. Enlarging the prostate helps reduce urinary symptoms caused by BPH, such as frequent need to urinate, slow urination, the feeling that you can’t completely empty your bladder, and it reduces the risk of urinary tract infections. Laser Vaporization of the Prostate has many advantages for all patients but especially patients who are older as the risk of bleeding is much lower, since there are no incisions made during the procedure. Additional advantages include quick recovery, little need for a catheter, more immediate results, and little to no need to stay overnight in the hospital.
Before the surgical treatment begins, a surgeon from Somerset Urological Associates inserts a narrow fiber-optic scope into the urethra to access the prostate. Utilizing the laser on the end of the scope, excess tissue in the prostate will be vaporized, or cut, out, clearing the prostate channel to allow urine to flow unrestricted through the urethra. Following the procedure, patients may experience blood in their urine, a burning sensation at the tip of the penis during urination, and difficulty holding urine, due to the bladder being used to having to push urine through a narrow urethra, instead of the newly cleared urethra.
If BPH has become a major issue in your life, you may be a candidate for laser vaporization of the prostate. Come in and speak with a Somerset Urological Associates’ doctor to learn more about the treatment, recovery, and benefits that it can offer to you.
